What is stretch fabric?
The essence and characteristics of stretch fabrics:
1. Core Definition
stretch source: Stretching and rebounding are achieved through physical deformation (fiber stretching) or structural deformation (changes in fabric voids)
Different from traditional fabrics: ordinary fabrics only rely on fiber bending to produce limited extension, while stretch fabrics have molecular level rebound memory
2. Core components
stretch fiber: spandex (polyurethane fiber) - provides core resilience rubber yarn - high tensile strength (mostly used for sports equipment)
Structural design: Loop structure of weft knitted fabric - natural stretchability Knitted mesh - directional extensibility
3. Differentiation of stretchity types
Elastic Type | Key Characteristics | Common Applications |
Single-Directional Stretch | • Stretches in one axis (width/length only)• Limited recovery force | • Dress shirt cuffs• Waistbands |
Bi-Directional Stretch | • Warp + weft stretch (2-way)• Balanced recovery | • Sportswear• Compression sleeves |
Four-Way Stretch | • Diagonal stretch added (45° bias)• Maximum mobility | • Yoga pants• Competitive swimwear |
Memory Stretch | • Heat-activated shape retention• Slow recovery speed | • Orthopedic braces• Maternity wear |
Structural Stretch | • Mechanical stretch via knit loops• No elastic fibers used | • T-shirt necklines• Sock cuffs |
4. Principle of Function Implementation
Molecular level: Block copolymer structure of spandex - molecular chains stretch during stretching and entropy driven retraction during relaxation
Fabric layer: Knitted coils rotate and unfold under tension, and the topological structure recovers after the pressure is released
5. Material limitations and taboos
Life Killer: Direct UV radiation (spandex molecular chain breakage) Bleach (corrodes the surface of stretch fibers)
Use the restricted area: High temperature ironing (>150 ℃ melt denaturation) Heavy machinery transmission belt (creep failure risk)
Process identification method
Burning test: Genuine spandex emits white smoke and has a slight burning smell of rubber bands; Polyester blended stretch fabric with burning residue and hard black particles
Stretching observation: High quality stretch fabric has uniform light transmission when stretched; Poor quality products exhibit cloudy white mist (uneven fiber thickness)
